As with the 2nd RS SB-29s, the 3rd RS SB-29 'Super Dumbos' accompanied SAC B-29s from their base at Yokota AB, Japan, across the Yellow Sea to North Korea, while the SB-17s, SC-46 and SC-47s performed shorter-range missions, often orbiting off the Japanese or Korean coasts. On 7th July, twelve days after the start of hostilities, the 3rd RS sent two L-5s into Korea, but the lack of suitable landing sites hampered their effectiveness. A detachment of H-5s was sent from Flight D at AshiyaAB to Taegu on 22ndJuly to assist in the evacuation ofwounded soldiers.

At the start of the war, the 2nd Rescue Squadron furnished local SAR and long-range SB-29s to accompany SAC B-29s as they crossed the Yellow Sea from their base in Okinawa into North Korea. The 3rd Rescue Squadron, being in closer proximity to the Korean peninsula, bore the brunt of search and rescue responsibilities during the war. The squadron possessed a mixed bagofSB-17, SB-29, SC-46, SC-47, andL-5 aircraft, as well as nine H'5s.
